What is Shamanic Breathwork™ (SBW)?

Shamanic Breathwork™ is a technique that allows you to access a naturally induced altered state of consciousness from which your inner shaman (or inner wise self) will lead you to whatever experiences you need to have for your growth and healing.

Shamanic Breathwork ArtworkSBW utilizes a specific breathing technique, chakra attuned music, art and energetic bodywork to help you:

Square Bullet Access your highest levels of wisdom and vision

Square Bullet Receive soul guidance about what you came here to do and the decisions you need to make to achieve your highest potential

Square Bullet Clear trapped energy/emotions from your body, including physical and emotional trauma, anxiety, stress, fear, anger, addictions, limiting beliefs and old patterns, from this life or past lives

Square Bullet Keep the flow of life force energy moving through your entire body, unimpeded, so that you may access and apply your full life force energy to what is important to you. Stuck energy contributes to feelings of lethargy, depression and lack of motivation, so keeping your energy channels "clean and flowing" is key to experiencing vitality and passion

Square Bullet Accept and embrace that you are both human and divine, by allowing you to open to the experience of Universal love AND your own humanness. Recognizing that you are a channel or bridge between Spirit and matter or "heaven" paves the way for you to be more fully embodied and begin to master the art of manifesting your heart's deepest desires

SBW blends multiple healing and visionary modalities that ancient cultures have utilized for centuries. Within the SBW session, modern energy healing and bodywork techniques are also used to support the journeyer's experience. Through entry into non-ordinary reality, the self is able to rapidly access levels of innate wisdom and vision that most other psychological or healing techniques can't come close to.

If you are in a place of seeking guidance, clarity, healing or accelerated transformation, I encourage you to try shamanic breathwork!

How do the mechanics of a SBW session work?

The person breathing, as we call it, would lay on a pallet on the floor. This pallet usually consists of a mat, sleeping bags or a couple of blankets so that the person can comfortably lie on the floor. This station also includes a pillow or two, a blanket to cover up with, a box of tissues, a trash bag and sometimes a stuffed animal.

When it is time to begin the SBW session, you will lay still on the pallet, close your eyes and begin to go inside. At this time I will be drumming a heartbeat and talking gently to you to help you clear your mind, call in your guides, establish a boundary of protection and drop into your inner shaman.

After these few meditative minutes with the drum heartbeat, I will then tell you to begin the SBW breath (which I will teach you during our prep time beforehand) and I will stop drumming and begin the music. As we say in the SBW community, "Breathe until you are surprised."

Most people actively do the breathwork breath for a few minutes until they begin to journey and then their breathing returns to "normal" as they drop into non-ordinary consciousness. Whenever you feel yourself "coming out of" the journey, you are encouraged to use the breathwork breath at any time to help you return back to your journeying state.

Most SBW sessions (meaning the length of the music) usually last between 60 and 75 minutes, sometimes up to two hours, and take you through all seven chakras, starting with the first chakra. The music is purposefully loud for several reasons. One, the vibration of the music penetrates the body and helps to loosen and activate trapped energies. The volume also allows you to feel supported, surrender more deeply, and to encourage you to make noises, cry or scream as you feel lead.

Once the music set is complete after the seventh chakra, I will begin to drum a heartbeat again and talk gently to you to help you come back into your body and collect all of the experiences of your breathwork. The music will then shift to gentle music with words played softly to help you return to this current dimension again.

When you have come back into your body and feel ready to get up, you will then move into the next phase which is art.

In most cases, I will have a large piece of paper with a circle drawn in the middle (we call it a mandala) and a box of pastels. You will be given ample time to capture on paper any images, words, colors, shapes or any other significant aspect of your journey that you desire to express.

At this point you can have some snacks, drink water, and do whatever you need to continue settling back into your body.

After this short break, you and I will then process your experience. You will be given the opportunity to share what happened during your SBW session as well as anything you wish to describe about your mandala. This processing allows further clarity, insight, substantiation and confirmation to emerge. Through the combination of art work and discussion, both the left and right brain experiences are expressed and begin to integrate.

Breathwork With Cojourney

What is your role as the facilitator when I am breathing?

Energetically, my job is to hold space for you and tune into your energetic needs. If I sense that energy might be getting stuck in your body, or feel that you need support in some way, I will assist by doing energy work and/or body work to help the energy move (assuming you had given me prior permission to touch you).

Physically, I am there to tend to your physical needs and keep you safe. If you need a tissue, drink of water, need to use the restroom or any other bodily needs, I am there to assist you. I am also there to ensure you are safe and don't run into anything else that might be around you, trip on something on your pallet or hurt your own self if you are moving very actively.

As a facilitator, I am trained to look for certain signals or cues that might indicate you are having an experience that often shows up for people who do breathwork, such as expressing anger, needing to rebirth, or holding a child. If it feels appropriate, I will hand you a prop (a pillow or stuffed animal for example) if I think that would help you in your process.

Outside of the SBW session itself (your time on the pallet), I am responsible for creating a safe and loving container within which you can go as deep as necessary, express yourself without embarrassment or shame, and be honored for who you are and what comes up for you. I am also there to help you process and integrate your experience, and give you suggestions for after care.

I recognize that my role is to support, encourage, honor and witness. I set my intention to be a channel for Spirit and take my role as your facilitator seriously as this is very meaningful and sacred work for me. I will never hijack your process or shame you for anything that occurred. You are in charge of your process and I always honor your innate wisdom.

During the processing segment, where we discuss your SBW experience and your mandala, I will ask you if you are open to feedback. Again, as facilitators we are trained to identify certain common themes that transcend culture, language or religion so I might see things in your mandala or be able to connect some aspects of your experience that you might not have seen.

What agreements are made before the SBW session?

Before each session, you and I will make some agreements for the sake of clarity and safety. You are always in charge of whether or not you want to be touched during a SBW session, so one conversation will be about whether or not you want to be touched, if you have an injury, or any other physical conditions that I need to be aware of.

As breathwork facilitators, we will NEVER touch you sexually or touch your genitals or breasts. While it is not uncommon for the one breathing to experience sexual energy moving through their body, I will never engage with you sexually.

We will also agree to a safe word, which is always "Stop!" This means that if there is anything I am doing that you don't like or don't want (even if you've given me prior permission to touch you) you can always say "Stop!" and I will stop. Conversely, if you are doing something inappropriate or doing something that might endanger me or you, I will say "Stop!" to you. This does not mean the SBW session is over if either one of us says "Stop!" It just means that you stop whatever you are doing in that moment.

There will also be an opportunity before we begin the session for you to share anything else you think I need to know as the facilitator to care for you while you are breathing.

These agreements, along with knowing I will be there to tend to your needs, allows you to let go of the thinking mind (ego mind) and drop more deeply into a place of relaxation and surrender. Once you begin breathing, there's nothing you need to do but be with the experience.

What might I experience during a SBW session?

There is no limit to what might occur for you during a session, but I can give you some common experiences that I have seen or experienced myself.

We store a lot of pain, trauma and pent up emotions in our body, so often times a session can be very physical for a person. They might squirm around on their pallet, be on their hands and knees, on their knees or even on their feet dancing or moving their body. The body has its own intelligence and knows what it needs to do to purge itself of stuck or unhealthy energy, if given the chance. If your body acts like it wants to move, allow yourself to move however you feel lead. There is nothing to be ashamed or embarrassed about. I will be there to help you stay safe.

Some people release a lot of emotion - grief, anger, rage and betrayal are common ones - through yelling, screaming, cussing, beating on pillows and sobbing. All of these expressions are encouraged and absolutely allowed. If it looks like you want to beat your fists on something, I always have extra pillows available.

It is not uncommon for people to go into past lives, reliving certain aspects as a necessary step in healing and releasing the influence of the past that is still trapped in their energy/body today. These past life visits also help people identify and understand patterns playing out in their current life.

Rebirthing is also a common experience on the breathwork floor. Some people go back to their own birth and re-pattern aspects of their life through re-enacting the birth process. Some people go through a symbolic rebirth through much the same physical process. There are common signs/clues a person will give when it looks like they are needing to rebirth and I as the facilitator will come over and offer some resistance for you to push against. If your body gives me birthing signs, then I will create a birth experience for you giving you a birth canal to pass through and the physical experience of coming all the way through the birth canal into the "world."

Journeying to retrieve a lost aspect of yourself (soul return) is a common occurrence for people. All of us have disowned or unloved parts of ourselves that were cast into the realm of shadow as we were growing up and learning what was acceptable and not acceptable. Often our greatest gifts and passions are buried deep in our psyche, and we are afraid to express these aspects of ourselves because of the messages we received as children. Reclaiming lost parts of ourselves is a hugely empowering experience available through SBW.

It is also common for people to experience several "acts" to their SBW session, like acts of a play. In one session a person can go into a past life, travel around in distant galaxies and be met and given information by one of their guides. It is not the same for everyone, but most people experience multiple pieces in their journey.

No two SBW sessions are ever the same and each time you breathe it is a new and different experience. You are encouraged to enter each SBW experience without an expectation of what will happen. You may absolutely set an intention of what you would like to work on or be given insight into. Your higher self will direct the session.

SBW is a tool you can use as often as you feel lead for the rest of your life.

Is SBW safe?

Shamanic breathwork is safe for everyone, with a few exceptions.

Women who are pregnant are advised not to participate in SBW.

People who experience psychotic breaks or are on anti-psychotic medications may not be a safe candidate for SBW. Further discussion with me would need to occur.

There is a release form I will ask you to complete and sign. If you have any physical or psychological conditions that you are unsure about, I encourage you to contact me and have a conversation to determine if it is safe for you to do shamanic breathwork.

What are the different formats for participating in SBW?

There are three ways you can experience SBW.

1. Private sessions. I conduct private sessions in my home. These sessions last 2-1/2 to 3 hours from start to finish. During a private session, you are the only one breathing and I, as the facilitator, am tending to you the entire time. The rate for private sessions is currently $225.

If you would like to book a private session with me, you may purchase below (for $225) and I will contact you to schedule the day and time.

2. Community breathwork with co-journeyers. Community SBW is a common way for multiple people to breathe at the same time. In a typical day-long event, the group is paired up into twos (if an odd number of people attend, groups of three can be created). Each pair then determines who will breathe first. The one breathing is the one who is lying on the pallet and having the SBW experience. The partner is called the co-journeyer. Just as explained above in my role as the facilitator, your co-journeyer becomes the primary person responsible for holding space and taking care of your physical needs. The facilitator(s) would then walk the floor, tending to the energy of the group and assisting individuals as Spirit leads.

Once the first SBW session is concluded and the breather has completed their art piece, there is usually then a break for lunch. After lunch, the partners switch and the one who was breathing in the morning now becomes the co-journeyer.

After both sessions conclude, we then move into a group processing where each person shares about their SBW experience and their mandala. Check the top of the page to see what community breathwork events are coming up.

3. Community breathwork without co-journeyers. In this format, everyone breathes at the same time and there are no co-journeyers. These sessions typically last about a half day (4-5 hours). Check the top of this page to see what community breathwork events are coming up.

While intense, the SBW acted as a vehicle in which I safely addressed some of the deep traumas I experienced as a child. My vision brought me to a
healing space that I had never been to — it was a space which I had not been able to fully access via other forms of therapy. The SBW showed me the way through to the yonder shore of forgiveness and release. I forgave my sexual abuser and was freed of the shackles of fear, anger, and resentment.

Stephanie held the sacred safe space and was the star agleam to guide me.

And when it was over, I was left with a deep sense of abiding peace and equanimity, which stayed with me for several days, as my body processed and integrated everything that happened in the SBW experience. I realized that I
no longer need to carry around the guilt and shame of being molested. The SBW showed me how to love and forgive myself. Since that day, my inner
critic has not been beating me up for the traumatic experiences I had as a child. It happened through no fault of my own. So through Shamanic Breathwork I have received the benediction.

Ultimately, words fall short. I invite you to come take a chance... take a chance and experience Shamanic Breathwork for yourself. Your Vision is calling.
