Liberate Yourself From Patriarchy

No Puppet On A StringTHURSDAY, MARCH 2, 2017

March is National Women's History Month and March 2-8 is National Women's History Week. On the eve of this special week of recognition, I couldn't imagine a better time to talk about the Inner Patriarch.

The Inner Patriarch is an aspect of every woman's psyche, just like the Inner Critic or ego. The Inner Patriarch plays a special role in that it teaches us how to get along as a woman in a male-dominated world. It carries the old patriarchal traditions, rules and values and is the inner spokesman for the outer patriarchy. It is a powerful force that usually operates beyond the edges of our awareness until its presence is brought to our attention. What is most interesting about this aspect of ourselves is that it is passed down to us by our mothers.

I was first introduced to the concept of the Inner Patriarch when I went through the Priestess Process in 2005. This work of the Inner Patriarch was pioneered by a woman named Sidra Stone and one of the main tools she uses to explore and elicit feedback from him is through voice dialog. We did an exercise in my circle where we paired up and interviewed each other's Inner Patriarch. The first question was, "Tell us about yourself, your beliefs and judgments about women, your beliefs and judgments about Stephanie and your influence on her life.” I was so clueless and this aspect of me so hidden that when my partner asked me the question I essentially replied, "I don't think he has much influence. He doesn't really have anything to say. I think we're pretty good here."

Ha! Nothing could be further from the truth. It just took me a little more effort to tune into his voice as well as his influence. He was deeply buried in my shadow, but when I located him, make no mistake, he was there in force and he had a BIG hairy opinion.

Free YourselfAs women, there are many tools we can use to do the deep work of reclaiming our lost and suppressed power. Dialoging with the Inner Patriarch is one of the most powerful tools I have found. And if you're curious whether or not men have this, for them it is the Inner Matriarch. To be clear, we both have an Inner Matriarch and an Inner Patriarch, but it is usually the opposite who exerts domination and control while the same gender overtly supports us. Men can dialog with their Inner Matriarch just as women can dialog with their Inner Patriarch.

March 8 is International Women's Day and their theme this year is Be Bold For Change. Women, I encourage bold. Become aware of your Inner Patriarch and begin to explore how his opinions and rules have held you back. The world situation is calling us forward en masse, asking us as women to rise up and be strong in our feminine power. You owe it to your life to liberate yourself from the influence of the patriarchy and it starts by looking at how you carry those messages within you and perpetrate them upon yourself. I am offering a special Inner Patriarch repatterning session for the month of March if you desire to be facilitated in this work.
